Overview
Nu serverless en de cloud het nieuwe paradigma lijken te zijn, zou je bijna vergeten dat het optimaliseren van databases op bare metal (on premise) minstens zo belangrijk is. Als het uitvoeren van complexe queries de bottleneck in data science projecten wordt, moet je overwegen om de snelheid van het datawarehouse te verbeteren met een column store database. We hebben het al eens eerder gehad over column store databases zoals Vertica.
In deze uitzending staat MonetDB centraal. MonetDB is een spin off van het Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI) en heeft als start up nu een investering van ServiceNow gekregen. Zij zijn in staat om queries 700x (!!) sneller te laten draaien dan traditionele SQL omgevingen. Ook zijn ze in staat om Machine Learning in de database zelf toe te passen, zelfs Tensorflow!
Lex Knape en Jurjen Helmus spreken in deze uitzending met Ying (Jenny) Zhang COO en Niels Nes CTO van MonetDB. We praten over column store database technologie, de optimalisatie van snelheid en over hoe het contract met ServiceNow tot stand gekomen is. Lex leek in het begin nog niet zo overtuigd maar de 700x snellere database blijft toch wel even hangen!

Niels Nes
Niels Nes, a recognised pioneer in column-store technology, has been a co-founder and technical advisor of MonetDB Solutions since the inception. For more than 20 years, he is one of the driving forces behind the open-source database system MonetDB, the company’s core product. Previous to MonetDB Solutions, Nes has co-founded VectorWise, another high performance columnar database system which was acquired by Actian in 2012. Nes holds a PhD. in computer science from the University of Amsterdam.
Ying Zhang Jennie
Ying Zhang, COO and co-founder of MonetDB Solutions. In 2010, received her PhD in 2010 on distributed query processing on heterogeneous XQuery engines, in the Database Architectures group of the Dutch national research Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI). From 2010 to 2016, Zhang has worked in the same group as a postdoctoral researcher, with focus on array database management system for data-intensive sciences, e.g. remote sensing and life sciences. Zhang has participated various EU projects, including FashionBrain, ACTiCLOUD, ExaNeSt, CoherentPaaS, Human Brain Project, TELEIOS and PlanetData, in most of which she leads the research work of CWI or MonetDB Solutions. Zhang is a referee of international conferences and journals, e.g, ACM SIGMOD, ACM Transactions on Database Systems, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, and Extended Semantic Web Conference. She is a (co-)supervisor of PhD and master students.
